An email template to get referrals

that you can copy and paste

I just celebrated my birthday, and this is the first newsletter I sent as a 32-year-old uncle. Is that young or old?

In today’s email:

  • The email template I use to get referrals.

  • Facebook launched a new Content Monetization Program for creators

  • Threads is giving you more time to edit your posts.

  • Pinterest launched GenAI for product image to advertisers.

👇 Let’s get into it

The email template I use to get referrals

The new gmail app on iOS

Over the past 10 years, I have used this incredibly effective email script that you can use to unlock the power of referrals from our favorite clients.

If you don't ask, you don't get – but you'd be surprised how many clients are willing to help, thinking either you're too busy or they don't want to be a nuisance.

Here’s a simple yet powerful template to make that ask:

Subject Line: Thinking of You – I Love Working with You

Email Body:

Dear [Client's Name],

I recently updated my portfolio and came across our work together. Thank you again for trusting me with your project – it was by far the most [insert true description of the project], and it was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with you on it.

I've been reflecting on my business plan for the future, and honestly, I would love more clients who are [insert true description about your client] like you.

So, it got me wondering – you wouldn't happen to know just one person, someone who, just like you, would benefit from [insert benefit you provided with your service]?

If anyone comes to mind, please feel free to make an email intro to this email; I would love to help them. And if there's anything I can do in return, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best,
[Your Name]

Why this email works

  • Challenges the Recipient: "You wouldn't happen to know" - encourages them to think of someone.

  • Reasonable Ask: "Just one person" - makes it easy to think of a single referral.

  • Complimentary: "Someone who just like you" - flatters the client and narrows their focus.

  • Value Reminder: "Benefit from [your service]" - reminds them of the positive experience they had with you.

Action to take

Use this email template and send it to at least 3 of your favorite past clients; let me know how it goes.
